In the coming of the digital age, many people jumped at the opportunity to monetize it. Today, as the recession claims more and more jobs, many people are looking to the internet for a new source of income. From web page design, to hosting a on-line gaming server, to even spamming people with ads through instant messaging, people have successfully made money off the internet.
on-line gaming has become extremely popular with people of all ages. The internet is a perfect medium for advertising products, as billions of people browse through it every day. Many major corporations such as JaGeX and Nexon have offered games that are free to play, but have an option of accessing a paid game edition with more features. Other companies that cater to on-line gaming, such as Blizzard, offer games with a fixed monthly cost for residual income.
Some people have taken to hosting a private server for their favourite games. Common targets are the online game MapleStory, offered by Nexon Corp, and World of Warcraft, offered by Blizzard. People have to pay in order to rent a dedicated server each month that can support their players, but make much more back in donations to keep the game running and by offering advantages such as free gold and items in exchange for these so called 'donations'.
Some people have spread viruses and ad-ware through instant messaging clients such as MSN and AIM. These are spread simply by clicking a seemingly harmless link sent by a friend on your buddy list. Once you click that link, you are immediately infected and the virus sends itself to every person on your buddy list without your knowing. This causes a chain reaction, and allows viruses to spread very easily. For example, if each person infected spread the virus to 3 other people through instant messaging, many people would be infected within a day. The first person gets it, send it to 3 people (total of 4), each of those people send it to 3 more people (total of 13), then each of those people send it to another 3 (total of 40).
As you can see, the internet has provided a great way for people to make money online.
